The root chakra — Muladhara in Sanskrit — is the foundation of your entire energy system. Located at the base of the spine, it governs your sense of safety, stability, survival, and belonging. When it’s open and balanced, you feel grounded, secure, and at home in your body and in the world. When it’s blocked, nearly everything else in your life becomes harder.
Signs Your Root Chakra Is Blocked
Physical signs: Lower back pain, problems with the legs, feet, or knees, digestive issues, chronic fatigue, and immune system weakness are all associated with root chakra imbalance.
Emotional and psychological signs: Chronic anxiety and worry, a persistent sense that the world isn’t safe, difficulty feeling at home anywhere, financial fears that feel overwhelming, a sense of being ungrounded or “in your head,” and trouble completing practical tasks are all signs the root chakra needs attention.
Life circumstances: Frequent financial instability, difficulty maintaining routines, and the feeling that your basic needs are never quite secure — even when they objectively are — often reflect root chakra wounds from the past. See our complete guide to all 7 chakras.
Root Chakra Healing Practices
Grounding in Nature
The simplest and often most effective root chakra practice: put your feet on the earth. Walk barefoot on grass, sand, or soil. The practice of earthing — direct skin contact with the ground — has measurable physiological effects and energetically reconnects you to the earth’s stabilizing frequency. Even 20 minutes makes a difference.
Root Chakra Affirmations
The root chakra responds to statements of safety, belonging, and basic security: I am safe. I am grounded. I have everything I need. The earth supports me. I belong here. Say these slowly, feeling into the body rather than just thinking the words.
Root Chakra Crystals
Red and black stones resonate with the root chakra. Black tourmaline provides protection and grounding; red jasper builds stability and stamina; obsidian clears ancestral and energetic debris; hematite anchors scattered energy into the body. Place these at your feet during meditation. Read our crystal healing guide for how to use them.
Yoga and Movement
The root chakra responds to movement that connects you to your lower body: mountain pose, warrior poses, squats, and any exercise that builds awareness of the feet and legs. The practice is less about flexibility and more about presence in the body.
Establishing Routine
The root chakra is healed by consistency. Regular sleep and wake times, consistent meals, and reliable daily practices all signal to the nervous system that life is stable — and that signal travels energetically to the root. Stability begets stability.
A Root Chakra Meditation
Sit comfortably with both feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes. Breathe slowly and imagine a glowing red light at the base of your spine — warm, steady, and growing brighter with each breath. With each exhale, send roots from this light down through the floor, into the earth, deep into the soil and rock below. Feel yourself held. Stay here for 10 minutes. When you open your eyes, you’ll likely feel noticeably more settled in your body.
