Crystals are energetic tools — they absorb, store, and transmit energy from their environment and from the people who handle them. That means they need regular cleansing to clear accumulated energies and restore them to their natural vibration. Here are 7 proven methods, along with guidance on which stones can handle which techniques.
Why Cleansing Matters
When you first receive a crystal, it has passed through many hands — miners, shippers, shopkeepers, browsers. It carries all of that energy. And as you use crystals in your healing practice, they continue absorbing. A crystal used for anxiety relief or emotional processing especially needs clearing. Cleansing resets the stone to its pure state so it can work at full capacity.
1. Moonlight (Best for Most Crystals)
Place your crystals outside or on a windowsill overnight to bathe in moonlight. This is the gentlest, most universal method — safe for virtually all crystals, including delicate ones that can’t get wet. The full moon is the most powerful time, but moonlight works any night. Leave them out from dusk to dawn for maximum effect.
Best for: All crystals, especially moonstone, amethyst, and clear quartz.
2. Running Water
Hold your crystal under cool running water for 30-60 seconds while visualizing the water washing away all absorbed energies. Natural running water (a stream or river) is ideal, but tap water works. Focus your intention on cleansing as you hold the stone.
Best for: Hard stones (quartz varieties, obsidian, tigers eye). Avoid for: Selenite, malachite, lepidolite, and any stone with a hardness below 6 on the Mohs scale — water can dissolve or damage them.
3. Smoke / Smudging
Pass your crystal through the smoke of burning sage, palo santo, or incense. The smoke carries away stagnant energies and resets the crystal’s field. This is particularly good for crystals used in emotional or protective work. Hold the crystal in the smoke for 30-60 seconds with intention.
Best for: All crystals, especially black tourmaline and stones used in ritual or spell work.
4. Sound
Sound vibration breaks up stagnant energy beautifully. Strike a singing bowl, ring a bell, or play a specific frequency (432 Hz or 528 Hz work well) near your crystals. The sound waves move through the crystal and reset its energetic field. This is the ideal method for large crystal clusters or pieces too heavy to move.
Best for: All crystals. Especially useful for crystal grids or large collections you want to cleanse at once.
5. Selenite
Selenite is one of the few crystals that never needs cleansing itself and can cleanse other stones. Place crystals on a selenite plate or next to a selenite wand overnight. Selenite’s high vibration gently lifts and neutralizes absorbed energies from surrounding stones.
Best for: All crystals. Perfect for a permanent cleansing station on your altar.
6. Earth / Burying
Bury your crystal in the earth (your garden, a pot of soil) for 24-48 hours. The earth absorbs and neutralizes all energies, returning the crystal to a completely clear state. This is one of the most thorough methods, especially after intense healing work.
Best for: Black tourmaline, obsidian, and any crystal that has absorbed particularly heavy or negative energy.
7. Sunlight
A few hours in direct morning sunlight will energize and cleanse most stones. However, use caution: many crystals fade in prolonged sunlight.
Best for: Citrine, carnelian, sunstone, tigers eye. Avoid for: Amethyst, rose quartz, aquamarine, fluorite — these fade quickly in direct sun.
How Often to Cleanse
As a rule of thumb: cleanse a new crystal before first use, cleanse crystals you wear daily every week or two, and cleanse crystals used in healing sessions after each use.
